Confederacy, 40 gun frigate

Location: North Gallery

The last of the “galley frigates”, the ship’s hull was pierced for sweeps.  She was long for her class and of rather shallow draft.  Built by Jedediah Willets at Norwich, Connecticut in 1778, she was built and rigged for speed.  She proved to be an unlucky ship and saw little service under the Continental flag.  She was captured by the British in January, 1781 and renamed HMS Confederate. Even though she was fairly new, she was broken up in 1782.
