Montaque Dawson (1895 – 1973)

Dawson, Montaque (1895 – 1973)

Montaque Dawson was a major British maritime artist of the early 20th century, who was a naval officer in the first world war. Famous for paintings of deep-water sailing ships, usually in a stiff breeze. Often called “king of the Clipper Ship School” of painting. His work was not really ships’ portraits as his details were not always accurate or in agreement with other artists. He had his own style of painting water, capturing the power of the sea, the driving action of the waves and the gusting wind. Most of the calendars depicting clipper ships were print of his work
