Bonaventura Peeters was a Flemish painter who specialized in marine subjects including tempest, shipwrecks and naval battles. He also painted landscapes and was an accomplished engraver and poet.
Born in Antwerp in 1614, it is not known under whom he studied although it has been suggested that he was the pupil of Andries van Eartvelt (1590-1652). His early works show the influence of the Flemish mannerist seascapes by Hans Savery the Elder (1580/4-1632) and Simon de Villeiger (1601-1653).
Peeters became a master of the Guild of St. Luke in 1634 and is known to have shared a studio with his elder brother, Gillis Peeters (1612-1653), with whom he collaborated on a major work, “The Siege of Calloo”, commissioned by the Antwerp municipal authorities for the town hall in 1639. Bonaventura Peeters (Flemish) moved to Hoboken (near Antwerp), Netherlands where he lived with his sister Catherina and younger brother Jan (1624-1677), both of whom were is pupils. He died in 1652 and is buried in Hoboken (now a district of Antwerp, Netherlands).
