Julius Porcellis (Dutch) 1610-1654)

Dutch marine painter, son and follower of Jan Porcellis. He was born in Rotterdam, and died in Leiden. His choice of subjects was similar to that of his father and he signed his paintings with the same monogram. He studied with his father who had developed the atmospheric seascape by the late 1620’s. They were less interested in details of specific ships, but emphasized the effects of weather and light. He was generally a less fluent artist, unable to match Jan’s subtle palette or give his composition the same sense of space. He often has a distinctively creamy palette and used vivid colours in his late paintings, departing even further from the tonal style of his father.
